Funding options for you

Updated: Aug 29

We understand that the cost of regular massage therapy can add up, especially when you are already managing other medical or care expenses. The good news is that there are a few funding options in Australia that may help cover some or all of the cost of palliative and oncology massage.

1. Private Health Insurance (Extras Cover)

Some private health insurance policies include remedial massage under their extras cover.

  • Check your policy: If you have extras cover, it’s worth reviewing to see if remedial massage is included.

  • Keep your receipts: If your cover applies, receipts from your massage therapist can usually be submitted to claim a rebate.

Every policy is different, so it’s best to contact your health fund directly if you’re unsure.

2. Government Support Programs

The Australian Government provides funding options that can assist with well-being services such as massage therapy:

  • Care at Home Program (formerly Home Care Packages): If you are currently on a home care package, or awaiting approval, you can ask your provider about using your package funds to access a massage therapist. This can be a helpful way to support your comfort and well-being at home.

  • End of Life Pathway (from November 2025): For people with a prognosis of less than three months, the new End of Life Pathway will provide additional support for in-home well-being services, including massage therapy. Your care provider can guide you on eligibility and how to access this funding.

  • Other pathways: Depending on your situation, massage may also be included under an Aged Care Package or through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), especially where it supports wellbeing, comfort, or carer relief.

3. Charities and Community Organisations

A number of charities and not-for-profit organisations also offer financial support for people living with serious illness. Some of these funds can be used for well-being services like massage.

  • Cancer and healthcare organisations: Groups such as Cancer Council Victoria, Carer Gateway, Pancare Foundation, and some Community Palliative Care services may provide funding assistance.

  • MND Victoria: For people living with Motor Neurone Disease, “Top Up” funding may be available to help cover services such as massage therapy. Your MND Victoria coordinator can advise on how this works.

Funding options vary depending on your personal situation, and sometimes they can feel complicated to navigate. If you’re not sure where to start, you don’t have to do it alone. I am happy to talk with you, your family, or your care coordinator to explore what support might be available for you.
